47-Year-old Christopher was referred to our Housing Support Unit (HSU) team as he was sleeping in his car.

Christopher had spent years in and out of homelessness due to a tumultuous relationship and felt unable to break free from it, often agreeing to unreasonable demands. He had been in the army and had various health issues including pre-cancerous cells, asthma, COPD, anxiety and PTSD. On one occasion, he was hospitalised after trying to hang himself. Christopher also had a history of offending.

Christopher had no biological family; he suffered low self-esteem and was not familiar with managing a tenancy or finances. He felt his health issues prevented him and did not believe in his ability but had interests in things he would like to do.

Initially, we assisted Christopher to claim the correct benefits including Personal Independence Payment. Staff also assisted to ensure he was attending health appointments, that he set up payment plans for debts and helped him to challenge arrears that had belonged to his spouse.

Following regular support sessions, Christopher gradually came to terms with the end of the relationship and he started to build his confidence. He managed his tenancy well and his relationship with his stepchildren and grandchild strengthened. Our HSU team motivated Christopher with his interests and helped him to access training.

Christopher now works in education as a child mentor; he learnt sign language and became active in the community volunteering in numerous community projects. Christopher is abstinent from drink except for once a year as a memorial to the friends he lost and has had no further relapses with his mental health.

Securing permanent accommodation was a challenge, as Christopher was unable to move to a number of areas due to gang issues related to his relationship. He has also adopted 2 dogs; with many housing providers refusing dogs we sought private renting in other areas that had lower rent rates and greenbelt for the dogs. Christopher secured a 3-bedroom house he was delighted with in another local authority at an affordable price.

Christopher is now settled and his days of sleeping in his car are far behind him.
