Learn more about our adoption service
We provide a welcoming team of professional and dedicated social work staff who are experienced in all areas of adoption. Our aim is to increase the opportunities for children who have experienced a difficult start, to enjoy a positive, safe and secure family life.
We pride ourselves on providing a friendly, professional, responsive service and on guiding our prospective adopters through the adoption process making them feel valued and supported. We are pleased to hear from potential adopters, including people of all genders, age, sexuality, disability, ethnicity, religion or marital status. We are Ofsted registered and we work in partnership with Local Authorities and Regional Adoption Agencies across England, Wales and Scotland to help them deliver services to some of the most vulnerable children in their care.
We offer on-going support to people with experience of adoption, such as adopted adults who wish to access information from their adoption records, trace their birth relatives and birth family members wishing to trace their adopted relatives.
We are members of CoramBAAF, the Consortium of Voluntary Adoption Agencies (CVAA) and Adoption UK.
Our approach
We believe all children should have the right to family life and should be brought up in families that can provide stable, loving care, guidance and a sense of self-worth, identity and belonging. We encourage the adoption of children from all backgrounds, including sibling groups, children with disabilities, older children and those that have had a difficult start in life.
There are some children who, for a variety of reasons, are not able to live with their birth families or relatives and need alternative permanent families. Nugent Adoption seeks to recruit prospective adopters to meet the needs of children who need a little bit of extra support.
Nugent Adoption has a team of experienced and friendly social workers who will provide ongoing lifelong support to families. We’re here for you from the moment you get in touch, guiding you through every stage of your adoption journey, from assessment to welcoming your child home, and continuing with support through school, college, and beyond, for as long as you need us.

Can I adopt if I’m single?
Yes, there is nothing unusual about single parenting. It has been possible for single people to adopt for many, many years and we have approved and placed children with many single adopters, including single people who identify as LGBTQ+.
-
Am I too old to adopt?
You must be at least 21 to adopt a child. There is no specific upper age limit but you do have to be able to care for your child throughout their childhood and beyond. We can discuss whether your age may impact upon the likelihood of you being matched with a child. People of all ages can and do successfully adopt, and what is important is that you can meet the individual needs of your adopted child or children.
-
How do I get started?
You can get started by simply getting in touch with us. One of our friendly and experienced team members will be happy to talk to you, answer any questions and help you decide if now is the right time for you to move forward. We also hold regular open information events which are advertised on our website.
-
I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, can I adopt?
At Nugent Adoption, we welcome enquiries from people of all sexualities and gender identities — Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Non-Binary and beyond. What matters most is the love, stability, and commitment you can offer a child waiting for their forever home.
-
Can I adopt if I live in rented accommodation?
Yes, you can adopt if you live in rented accommodation and you do not need to have a ‘big’ home. However, you will need to be able to provide a child or children with their own bedroom. Sibling groups can share dependent on size of group, ages and their own needs.
-
Can I adopt if I have a pet?
Having a pet does not stop you from adopting, pets are often an important part of family life and many children gain a great deal from the experience of having pets. However, some pets may pose a danger to children and we will follow Coram/BAAF guidance and carry out a dog assessment as standard for all applicants who apply to adopt.
-
Can I adopt if I smoke/vape?
If you or any member of your household smokes or vapes, you will not be able to adopt a child under 5 years of age as stated in the national guidance from BAAF, as it is recognised smoking can have a particularly damaging effect on young children’s health. However, if you are considering a child over 5 and you are a smoker, we can talk through this and think about how we can proceed.
