At Marydale Lodge, we’re all about creating a warm, safe, and caring environment for children and young people aged 10-18 who need extra support during difficult times. We’re proud to be rated ‘good’ by Ofsted – a reflection of the love and dedication our team puts into everything we do.
We provide a secure home under Section 25 of The Children’s Act 1989, with the goal of helping each child feel supported and valued. Using the Secure Stairs framework, we offer integrated care with onsite health services and education, giving every child the tools they need to grow and move forward.
Our approach is all about kindness and understanding, using Compassion Focused Therapy to guide the way we speak, act, and support each young person. Whether it’s helping them through a tough time or preparing them for the next step, we focus on their unique needs to make sure they feel safe and heard.
Why Marydale?
Marydale Lodge provides a secure home with education provision for children and young people aged 10 to 18 years.
The primary purpose of our home is to provide protection and support for young people, stabilising high-risk behaviours, identifying underlying causes and helping them transition safely to their next home.
We achieve this by implementing effective strategies to reduce the risk of these behaviours, ensuring the safety of the young people we support, setting clear boundaries and offering a holistic programme of interventions. These efforts help children and young people to develop coping strategies to reduce risk-taking behaviours and smoothly integrate into the local community. Each young person benefits from an individual behaviour management plan, providing them with alternative relaxation techniques to promote their wellbeing.

All of our young people receive a comprehensive healthcare service, commissioned by NHS England, through a partnership between Bridgewater Trust and Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust. The healthcare team includes primary and mental health nurses, GPs, dentists, opticians, clinical psychologists, and consultant child and adolescent psychiatrists, all focused on recovery and health promotion.
Upon admission, each young person undergoes an initial health screening using the Child Health Assessment Tool (CHAT), which helps identify their general, mental, and sexual health needs. As necessary, assessments for substance misuse, neurodevelopmental issues, and learning disabilities are also carried out. An individual healthcare plan is developed for each young person, and regularly reviewed to ensure its effectiveness and relevance.
Our team is highly experienced in working with young people who have a history of self-harm, substance misuse, child sexual exploitation, going missing from care, and challenging behaviours. We support and encourage young people to reflect on their past experiences and guide them toward a more fulfilling life path by using tailored skills and strategies. We aim to help them maintain a safe and healthy lifestyle, where they feel valued and connected to society, as this is key to their long-term well-being and success. Achievements in their personal, educational, and social journeys are celebrated and rewarded, building the young person’s self-esteem.
Education at Marydale
We promote regular school attendance and young people are encouraged to be positive about attending education, receiving regular rewards for their achievements.
The education department is spacious and well-equipped with learning resources including English, Maths, ICT, Humanities, Creative Media, Physical Education, Sports Science, Art, Personal Social Health Education, Careers, Personal Skills, Food Technology. There is also a large sports hall, which allows space for sporting and other educational or recreational activities.
We offer personalised learning programmes based on our young person’s educational needs which can include the National Curriculum and access to a range of nationally accredited awards and qualifications. The aim of the education department is to engage all young people in both formal and informal learning opportunities whilst at Marydale Lodge which they may have missed prior to admission, and to encourage them to continue to engage in learning when they leave.
At Nugent, we recognise the importance of education in a young person’s life and its potential to enrich, empower and inspire. We regard qualifications and evidence of achievement as a currency for life and recognise that without them an individual’s life can be severely limited. A high priority is given to the promotion of education, seeing it as valuable in itself and as part of the preparation for adulthood. Teachers and residential team members work closely together using a key teacher system to monitor the young person’s educational progress. The residential team can then support each young person in their education ensuring that they are in the right frame of mind and possess all necessary equipment. On occasion, the team will offer extra supervision for young people in education to provide behavioural, emotional or learning support.
