Education at The Willows

We believe that every child or young person deserves a safe and nurturing environment to heal and thrive. We support children and young people with a focus on personalised learning that promotes each child and young person’s interests, strengths and learning style. At the home, a high priority is given to the promotion of education seeing it as valuable in itself, and as part of the preparation for adulthood. The home is outward facing and works in partnership with education providers to address any themes or concern as relates to education.

Every effort is made in assisting the children and young people to remain at the school they attended prior to admission ensuring continuity in education and relationships. If this is not appropriate for the child’s individual needs or circumstances, careful consideration is given in choosing a local school most appropriate to the child’s age, ability and/or religion, and any additional needs.

A nurturing environment is essential for children or young people who are often traumatised through their previous lived experiences, affecting their emotional and mental health. They need the space in which to express themselves, with the opportunity to be involved in many activities.

In the neighbourhood, there are many activity centres; youth clubs, Formby Pool Trust, uniform groups e.g. scouts, sports groups, swimming baths. There is a Red Squirrel Nature Reserve, with picnic areas in the woods, which head down to the sand dunes and sea at Formby Beach.

Some of these children and young people have been in numerous placements and we at The Willows aim to offer stability and permanency. As they reach adolescence, our young people like to enjoy more social freedom, with the opportunity to practise their positive independent living skills with support from the staff, through incentives and rewards.

Placements at The Willows

Nugent home placements can be arranged quickly or planned over a longer period of introduction, for either short or long term, according to need.

The service provides for the individual needs and rights of the young person in relation to age, gender, race, sexuality and disability meeting specific dietary, cultural, religious and language needs. Careful preparations are also made to enable the child or young person to return happily to their own family, to be successfully placed with a new permanent family, or to move on to supported living or live independently in the community.

We assess the young people’s needs and attachments, to develop and implement individual care plans with the young person, family and professionals. A following risk assessment is carried out for each young person in order to highlight any issues which may occur or the need for any adaptations to the physical environment.
