St. Joseph’s Residential Home is a specialised facility designed to support individuals who have sustained a brain injury after birth, due to an event such as a stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), brain tumour, or other neurological incidents.

Our home provides a safe and structured environment where individuals with an ABI can receive the care and rehabilitation they need while living as independently as possible. The services and support focuses on promoting recovery and enhancing quality of life.

Our support includes

Personalised care and rehabilitation plans

  • Each person supported has an individualised support plan that focuses on their specific needs, challenges, and recovery goals. These plans are developed including input from multi-disciplinary teams that could include doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language therapists, and nurses.
  • Support plans may be adjusted over time to address evolving needs as the person progresses or faces new challenges in their recovery journey.

24/7 care and support

Our home provides around-the-clock care and supervision to ensure that individuals are safe, and their medical and therapeutic needs are being met.

Support may include assistance with daily activities (e.g., personal care, mobility, nutrition, and medication management) for those who need help due to cognitive or physical impairments.

Cognitive and physical rehabilitation

  • Support staff help individuals to regain independence by assisting with everyday tasks like cooking, dressing, and personal hygiene, and by adapting the environment to their needs.
  • Speech and language therapists may assist individuals who experience difficulties with communication, swallowing, or cognitive functions such as memory and problem-solving.
  • Physical therapy may be provided to help individuals improve mobility, strength, and coordination, often after a brain injury affects motor skills.

Social and recreational activities

  • St Joseph’s offer a variety of recreational and social activities to engage people supported opportunities for socialising, building skills, and improving quality of life.
  • Activities may include arts and crafts, music therapy, gardening, fitness programs, outings, and cognitive games designed to stimulate brain function.
  • Our beautifully landscaped gardens are a source of pride at St Joseph’s, providing a serene and therapeutic environment for the people we support. The gardens are designed to facilitate social interaction, with designated areas for group activities, gardening, outdoor picnics and games, creating friendships among peers. We believe that access to nature is essential for emotional and physical health, and our gardens offer a nurturing space for enjoyment.
  • These activities help individuals to develop or maintain social skills, improve cognitive functioning, and create a sense of purpose and fulfilment.

Behavioural and emotional support

  • People supported may have emotional or behavioural changes due to brain injury (e.g., impulsivity, irritability, anxiety, or depression). Support staff assist with managing these behaviours and maintaining each person’s well-being as a priority.

Family involvement and education

  • Family members may be involved in the care process through regular updates and family engagement at St Joseph’s. This helps them understand their loved one’s condition and learn how to support their recovery at home or during visits.
  • Support for families helps them cope with the challenges of caring for someone with an ABI, especially in understanding cognitive and behavioural changes that may occur.

St Joseph’s provides a comprehensive, person-centred environment for individuals recovering from a brain injury. It combines therapeutic, and emotional support to help individuals rebuild their lives and regain independence. By offering personalised care and rehabilitation, our homes help residents cope with the challenges of brain injury while fostering recovery, well-being, and a meaningful life.
