Real stories, real impact

Meet one of Nugent’s inspiring leaders, Brandon Roussel, who began his journey as a Secure Childcare Worker and, through dedication and passion, progressed to become a Registered Manager.

In just four years, he’s made a significant impact on young lives and continue to foster positive change within residential care. His story highlights the power of opportunity, growth, and making a real difference in social care.

What was your first role in childcare / adult services?

My first role was a secure childcare worker within Marydale Secure Unit

What motivated you to pursue a career in this sector?

I was really interested in the work that was done within Marydale, and how the most vulnerable children in the country were supported to achieve positive outcomes

What key milestones or promotions helped shape your career?

I have been afforded an array of opportunities so it is difficult to pick key milestones. It has felt quite fast-paced which I have loved. I have been involved in several transformation projects, compliance work, achieving strong regulatory ratings, but most importantly, genuinely seeing the difference we can make in young people’s lives is what continues to shape my career and thinking.

I have been fortunate to work as a childcare worker, a senior, a deputy manager and now a registered manager, and I am confident there are further opportunities to come. All of this has taken place in the last 4 years.

Nugent really does promote internal development if it is something that you wish to achieve. The experience I learnt the most from was when I was fortunate enough to develop my own children’s home, and this came from a singular visit to a de-commissioned home, with the CEO and a number of my peers, and we all discussed a vision.

It was so much fun to really map out my own service, truly, from the bricks and mortar of the building to the recruitment and development of the staff team. The home has gone out to support a number of fantastic young people, and achieve an ‘Outstanding’, and my own Team are now taking development opportunities of their own, I could not be more proud!

What inspired you to become a Registered Manager?

I was inspired by the tenacity of other Registered Managers in Nugent. It is a brave job, and it holds a lot of legal weight, but the results of the work are inspiring. There is nothing as truly fulfilling as watching a young person grow into feeling safe, loved and happy within your service when you know these are feelings they may not have experienced before.

Were there any specific training, mentoring, or development programs that supported your progression?
I have been fortunate to have a number of fantastic mentors, both those who have line-managed me and also peer mentorship. The services are well-linked and inclusive, and we all leaned on each other.

How did your previous roles prepare you for the responsibilities of a Registered Manager?

I often jest that my development in Nugent was like a crash course in becoming a Registered Manager because it has felt so quick. I have enjoyed that, and I wanted that. I have learnt successes, mistakes and mentorship.

What advice would you give to someone looking to progress in this field?

Go for it – I could not do another job outside of the sector now. It is so varied, you wear so many hats, and no day is the same.

Are there key skills or qualities that helped you advance?

Be honest, be open, be reflective and learn to be a bit selfless.

What would you say to someone considering a career in residential care?

Go for it – I could not do another job outside of the sector now. It is so varied, you wear so many hats, and no day is the same.

What impact do you hope to have as a Registered Manager?

Ultimately, its to make a difference to young peoples lives.

How do you foster a positive culture in your home?

Role modelling being open and honest, be reflective and give staff a safe space to so exactly how they feel without judgement. Staff need to feel emotionally safe as well as physically safe. If your team feel safe, so will your young people.

Can you provide a chronological timeline of your career journey within Nugent, highlighting the roles you’ve held and the dates you transitioned into each position?

  • February 2021-February 2022 – Senior Specialist Childcare Worker
  • November 2021- February 2023 – Deputy Manager
