Successful student work placements at Nugent!
On the 12th May, Nugent held a lunch to celebrate the conclusion of a 70 day placement for 4 wonderful Social Work students from Liverpool Hope University!
Each of the students was placed in a different service across Nugent which included: Nugent Adoption, Marydale Lodge secure children’s home, Nugent Community Choices, and St Joseph’s care home. The placements were part of each student’s course and allowed them to experience social work in a real life setting and to understand the different needs of our varied services.
They ended their placement by delivering a presentation to their peers about their respective service, detailing the functions of the placement as well as the knowledge they had gained during their time working at Nugent.
Not only did the students successfully fulfill their work placements, but they also became valued members of the Nugent team in their 70 days with us, helping us continue to provide our vital services to those who need them the most!
On the penultimate day of the placements, the students were invited to a celebratory lunch at Nugent’s Edge Lane site by their placement supervisors. The lunch was also attended by Nugent’s COO, Dr Kate Herod, and Vice Chair of Trustees, Sarah Thomas. Both Kate and Sarah applauded the students for all their hard work and seamlessly becoming a part of the Nugent family for the duration of their placement. The students reminisced about their placements and the valuable lessons they learned during their time with Nugent.
Meet the amazing students:
Sammie-Jo
Sammie-Jo is in her second year of a BA(Hons) Social Work degree, she was placed with Nugent Adoption where she was supervised by Manager Jo Lloyd.
Sammie-Jo said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my 70 day placement with Nugent Adoption, it has provided me with multiple avenues for learning and developing as a future social worker.
During my time with the adoption team, I feel enriched by their strong holistic, admirable values. I have not only developed as a professional but as a person. I cannot thank the adoption team and Nugent as a whole enough for this wonderful, ultimately life-changing opportunity. Nugent is a charity that celebrates uniqueness and makes the most vulnerable individuals see the light that they are often blind to. I hope Nugent continues to grow and share their positivism with our community and wider.”
Atinuke
Atinuke came from Nigeria to study the 2 year MA Social Work degree. She was placed with Manager Keith Wilde within Individualised Community Support (ICS). ICS provides 1:1 or 2:1 flexible support for people with learning disabilities who may have additional support needs, to access a full range of activities in their local community.
“It has been an amazing journey to be with Nugent, I’ve learned firsthand how to communicate with people living with disabilities and how to help them integrate into the community.
I’ve had help from all the staff in ICS, and I am taking away with me the values learned here in ICS. I loved being here on placement, and especially thanks Manager Keith for making sure that I know how the organization works”
Ehtisham
Ehtisham is also a student in the 2 year MA Social Work degree. He has come from India specifically to study this course with Liverpool Hope University. He was placed with Michelle Wooley at Marydale secure children’s home. Marydale has recently been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, making it the only secure children’s home ran by a charity to have an ‘outstanding’ rating!
“My placement was with secure children accommodation, I am really lucky to get my placement with this service. It’s amazing to experience and learn how the young peoples’ needs are met there and how their behaviour is stabilized, and how they are integrated to live in a community.
Nugent’s values are not just written on posters on the walls, they are in the air!”
Tomy
Tomy was also a part of the same master’s course in Social Work. Tomy was placed with Manager Helen Ormandy at St Joseph’s care home, which provides care and support for adults with acquired brain injuries, neurological disorders and or physical disabilities.
“I was blessed to have someone like Helen as my onsite supervisor and Manager.
Thank you to Nugent for this great privilege, thank you for recruiting and training excellent staff and thank you for the quality of management.
Now I’m not emotional but I would like to express my appreciation, especially to Helen, for the professional and thoroughly human service she provided throughout my assessment. You made an intimidating and potentially draining experience a completely positive one that has given me huge confidence during my placement. You went above and beyond to guide me through the process and make sure my assessment was the best possible reflection of my needs.
I really want to appreciate the team leaders and staff of St Joseph Residential Home for helping me to build my confidence and also giving me a platform to learn and grow. You have all exceeded my expectations of what I thought a placement assessment process could be. Thank you!”
