After two decades of endless commitment and tireless efforts, Liverpool FC legend Phil Thompson announces his retirement as the patron of Merseyside-based charity, Nugent, having been a vital force in Nugent’s charitable endeavours over the last 20 years.

Phil Thompson, renowned for his distinguished football career with Liverpool in the 1970s and 1980s, represented England on 42 occasions and captained the national team six times. Beyond his contributions on the field, Phil dedicated 20 years to serving as Nugent Charity’s patron, leaving an indelible mark on the Merseyside-based charity, Nugent.

Phil recently expressed his desire to spend more time with his grandchildren in his role as a proud grandad, which contributed to his decision to retire from his longstanding position with Nugent.

Throughout his tenure as Nugent Charity Patron, Phil played a pivotal role in various initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable communities. His involvement in launching funds and hosting events, such as the annual Phil Thompson Golf Classic, significantly contributed to raising funds and awareness for Nugent’s essential projects.

The Phil Thompson Golf Classic, hosted for 17 consecutive years, has become a cornerstone in Nugent’s fundraising efforts. The event brought together supporters and businesses, fostering a sense of community while contributing to the organisation’s initiatives. The most recent golf classic, held at Hurlston Hall in Ormskirk in May 2023, continued the tradition of philanthropy and community engagement.

In addition to his golf classic, Thompson played a crucial role in the launch of the Gubay Crisis Fund, a collaborative effort made possible through the support of the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation, aiming to alleviate the burdens faced by disadvantaged families and individuals across Liverpool.

Upon announcing his retirement, Phil Thompson shared his thoughts on his two-decade-long association with Nugent, stating, “It’s been an absolute pleasure to stand by Nugent for these two decades. Their impactful work is truly crucial for communities across Merseyside, and being a part of it has meant the world to me. Those golf days, they have been instrumental in spreading the word about the incredible work Nugent does. I’m genuinely thankful for all we’ve achieved together for the charity.”

Nugent CEO, Jo Henney, expressed deep gratitude, saying, “On behalf of Nugent and all of the beneficiaries we support, we would like to say a huge thank you to Phil Thompson, who has helped Nugent be the voice for the voiceless. It has been a pleasure to have Phil’s support. His dedication and passion have made a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.”

Everyone at Nugent expresses their genuine appreciation to Phil Thompson for his exceptional dedication and invaluable contributions over the past 20 years. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire positive change in the lives of those Nugent serves.
