Volunteer and Community Service
The Volunteer and Community Service at Caritas in Nugent is responsible for training, supporting and coordinating the work of volunteers within Nugent and community groups throughout Merseyside.
Nugent values and respects the contribution volunteers make to the work of the organisation. Volunteers bring a wealth of different experiences and ideas to Nugent and the people who receive our services. Volunteers are vital to the smooth running of our charity. We have volunteers who have been involved with us for over 30 years, which is a testament to the dedicated commitment of our volunteers and the hard work they do for Nugent.
From trustees and campaigners to carers and fundraisers, we have people from all walks-of-life, contributing to the lives of others, giving up their time, bringing energy, dedication, compassion and dignity to the work they do.
Benefits of volunteering with Nugent
Volunteering can strengthen your community and your social network. You can make connections with the people you are helping, and you cultivate friendships with other volunteers. Nugent gives you the opportunity to volunteer in your local community, meet new people and you can take part in recognition and celebration events.
Loneliness and social isolation are two of the most overlooked concerns in society. Some of the volunteer roles on offer at Nugent focus on befriending and building a positive relationship with a wide range of people across our services.
Volunteering at Nugent is open to everyone. Nugent works with diverse communities and vulnerable members of society. The benefits of volunteering can be life-changing for some people as it improves self-esteem by being a positive role model to others. Volunteering can reduce stress and improve well-being. Volunteering gives people the tools they need to be happier, healthier and well-rounded individuals.
Employers overwhelmingly look favourably on job applicants who have volunteered. Nugent provides volunteers with an opportunity to learn new skills and provides access to free training and development opportunities. Nugent will provide a reference for future volunteering or paid opportunities.
If you are ready to make friends, improve your mental and physical health, and maybe develop new skills along the way, then start volunteering with Nugent. You can change your life and the lives of others when you do.

“What a warm welcome I received from everyone I met at Nugent! I didn’t feel like a ‘new’ volunteer, since from day one I have been invited and included in the diversity of work that Caritas provides within Nugent, meeting lots of different people.
(Francesca, Caritas Catechist volunteer and link person)
“When trying time decide a skill or a job for myself; I wanted to be the best asset to my community as a whole. By helping individuals through volunteering at Nugent; those who may have had a bad experience or weakness in this journey of life; this short space of my day, truly shapes my existence here. I just hope that my volunteering across several Nugent services has helped empower individuals to be able to have hope and know that somebody cares.”
(Theresa, volunteer at Nugent’s charity shop, St Joseph’s Care Home and Epsom Street Community Centre)

We value our volunteers and want everyone to enjoy being part of Nugent. By donating your time, skills and experience you’re making our services possible, enabling us to extend our support and giving individuals a much-needed voice. You’re helping to break the isolation that so many of the people we support feel. If you think volunteering is for you and you have something to give, even if it’s just your time, we’d love to hear from you. All our volunteers receive an induction and Safeguarding training with ongoing support from our Volunteer Coordinators.
