Deaf Awareness Week 2nd-8th May 2022
Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) is run on an annual basis by the UK Council on Deafness, it will be taking place between Monday 2nd – Sunday 8th May 2022.
The theme for this year is Deaf Inclusion, to explore the entire theme of inclusion within the Deaf Community.
The aim of Deaf Awareness Week is to highlight the impact of hearing loss on everyday life and increase the visibility and inclusion of Deaf people.
The Deaf Awareness Week also emphasises the importance of mental health within the Deaf community. Deaf people can often feel unsupported and excluded by lack of accessibility within their everyday environments. Deafness often goes hand in hand with other invisible challenges, such as mental health, with everyday challenges and lack of support leading to poor mental health within the Deaf community.
DAW aims to highlight underrepresented groups amongst Deaf population such as migrants, people of colour, LGBTQ+ community, ethnic and religious minorities, as well as raising the pertinent issues of deafness being overlooked in education, health settings and the workplace.
Deaf awareness events will run in all regions across the UK, to find out more about Deaf Awareness Week please visit the UK Council on Deaf Awareness Website or simply search ‘Deaf Awareness Week 2022’ to find events in your local area.
